Tim O’Connor: What’s the story?

Why’d he go to Baylor and then go right back to Indiana? Anybody know?

Jacopo

28 day(s) ago

Presumably it was a trial run and he didn't like it.

Anaximander

I think he visited Waco

Sally

He took a year leave from IU to see if Baylor would be a better place for him. He decided not.

Waco and Bloomington-- an academic Scylla and Charybdis if there ever was one. I may not be at an R1, but location in more pleasant settings has its own delights. (Think lots of waves and beaches.)

Be nice. Bloomington is wonderful -- for literally months and months at a time!

First contact with Trent Dougherty has that type of effect.

Mario

The back-and-forth move was a performative demonstration of a point about free will that is connected to his research.

Cicero

Not an American, but how do you pronounce Dougherty? And how distinguished is this last name compared to say Wedgwood and Rothschild?

Louis

I'd say "Dorety" would be a close approximation.

Socrates

"First contact with Trent Dougherty has that type of effect."

I wouldn't be all that keen on having Beckwith as a colleague, tbh. I'd trade one minute with Beckwith for five minutes with Dougherty.

Dougherty was an applicant to the PhD program I was in. His prospective student weekend included casually saying “it appears all of the women in this program are sluts.” That went over well.

He’s a total douchecanoe.

Jules

I thought it was ok to be a slut.

What?! That's crazy.

Is it really morally permissible for us to be gossipping about other people like this? I don't mean we should stop because moral judgments don't motivate me. I am just curious if you guys think it's morally defensible

Advice to young male philosophers:

Take a look at the handful of genuine alphas in philosophy. They have traditional wives and families or beautiful foreign wives and partners instead of the specters who haunt universities in their 30s and 40s... shudder.

Don't be like Trent, leave these sad and angry ladies alone, his mistake is trying to play nice with SJWs on facebook with his hipster christian nice guy persona. Thanks for taking one for the team Trent.

Mahatma

I disagree with that. My argument goes as follows.

(i) intuitively, Wittgenstein does not have wives.

(ii) intuitively, Wittgenstein is an alpha

Therefore, it's false that alphas have wives, much less foreign beautiful wives.

I'm genuinely curious as to where this reasoning may have gone wrong? I'm genuinely curious. Genuinely yours.

I think it does have a lot to do with Trent Dougherty, and O'Connor's unwillingness to be a part of a department that claims to be Christian but allows Dougherty's actions to go unchecked.

Trent has an attractive wife and four children. Hate on him if you want, but this seems like weird grounds for doing so.

Deeply messed up to make shit up like this.

I normally do not spend a lot of time thinking about philosophers or people in general that I look down upon. This fixation on Trent sounds more like somebody is jelly. Unless someone has real knowledge of course, but if you know of wrongdoing, you should report it to someone appropriate not make vague accusations in a forum like this.

Cicero

I've got no interest in defending Dougherty, but there's a pattern developing here -- someone makes extremely vague, cryptic references to wrongdoing by Dougherty, and then disappears. It seems a lot like someone dislikes the guy (never met him myself) and is using an anonymous forum to shit on him. Imagine that.

Mario

27 day(s) ago

Cicero, I am not defending Trent from any accusations because I do not know what they are. I certainly do not plan on dying on any hills. But has Trent done something specifically wrong or is this just people viciously expressing their general disgust? It feels like the latter and that is not appropriate.

Gorgias

Dougherty has done a number of specifically wrong things. 5 that I know of. I won't say more because the Title IX investigation is ongoing.

To those who are saying this is made-up: it's not. Don't be part of the problem. If you think you know him well enough to know that he wouldn't do this: you don't. Think about the people he's hurt before you rush to defend him.

Jackass. No one is defending Dougherty here. These are anonymous, vague allegations that there are allegations. The point isn't that Dougherty is or isn't a good guy, or that he did or didn't do something (we know not what), but that it's super-shady to anonymously suggest he did something, without even saying what it is he supposedly did, or how it is you supposedly know about it. What am I supposed to say? "Oh, yeah. I'm sure he did that thing that some anonymous people on the internet allege that other people allege that he did, whatever it is."
