What do you people think? Stories?

Who is leaving?

Franz

are they afraid that they wont get tenure?

Simplicius

Caie, Gelber, and probably another young philosopher in the HPS.

Kenneth

Caie's moved around a lot. He's probably got a better location in mind. Gelber's trajectory looks similar--are they maybe together?

I know HPS nearly lost Chirimuuta a couple years ago.

Yeah, but where?

Caie and Gelber are moving together.

Caie and Gelber: Toronto I think. Porter Williams: USC. They're moving presumably because they are better places to live and work. I don't think there's anything more to it than that.

Yeah, but where?

Caie and Gelber are moving together.

Yeah, Caie and Gelber are married. They haven't moved much; both have only moved once, each to Pitt, to solve their two body problem (Caie from Rochester and Gelber from Syracuse). I'm not sure whether they've decided to go to Toronto, but the reason for it, if so: Jennifer Whiting is a total nightmare and the department is a really unpleasant place to be junior faculty as a result.

Caie is Canadian and went to McGill - I think - undergrad so this seems a reasonable move for them.

Can confirm. It's also not just Whiting who's a nightmare. Other senior faculty there are famously difficult to work with.

Caie spent 1 year on the TT at Rochester and 2 at Syracuse before Pitt.

But yeah. If I was Canadian, I'd want to move back north if at all possible.

Names. Who's difficult to work with?

Trent Dougherty. Especially if you don't like a hand down your pants during social functions.

I'm not Facebook friends with Caie, but I did a FB search on him. His "about" page indicates that he's from Toronto and lists his high school, which is in Toronto.

I know Jennifer Whiting and it surprises me that she's difficult. But, people can be different in department contexts, so I'm not doubting it, just saying.

Karl Schafer left a few years ago. If Pitt is going to continue having trouble retaining junior faculty, their days are numbered as a top program. No way they will compete with Rutgers and NYU in the game of buying up established senior people.

I don't know her, but went to look at her picture. She's got "attack dog" written all over her emaciated face.

They also recently lost Harvey Lederman and, a few years ago, Kristin Inglis (who left academia).

Karl left because he wanted to live somewhere better like LA. Pitt just hired another rising star junior person. They have other rising junior stars. They'll be fine.

Why do people hate Whiting? I notice that several of her students did find really good jobs. She look very supportive.

It's Whiting. She's a very, very, very difficult colleague.

I went by the sensory data, as I'm strongly inclined to do by natural selection.

That's rarely if ever "wrong."

I had to deal with her in relation to a project, and she came off as a demanding, entitled psychopath.

So you mean she's no different really than most of the people in this profession once you've scratched the surface?

All the big names at Pitt are in their 60s and 70s: McDowell, Brandom, Gupta, Wilson. Whiting is an exception, so is Thompson, though he's nuts. Agree with earlier comment that Pitt has plenty of good juniors, though.

How Michael Thompson is even employable, let alone at a top philosophy graduate school, is beyond mystifying.

I once saw him give one of the worst colloquium talks I've ever seen.
