Why sodomy is wrong

Nicola

14 day(s) ago

Saint Bernardine of Siena was a famous preacher, celebrated for his doctrine and holiness. Regarding homosexuality, he stated:

"No sin in the world grips the soul as the accursed sodomy; this sin has always been detested by all those who live according to God.… Deviant passion is close to madness; this vice disturbs the intellect, destroys elevation and generosity of soul, brings the mind down from great thoughts to the lowliest, makes the person slothful, irascible, obstinate and obdurate, servile and soft and incapable of anything; furthermore, agitated by an insatiable craving for pleasure, the person follows not reason but frenzy.… They become blind and, when their thoughts should soar to high and great things, they are broken down and reduced to vile and useless and putrid things, which could never make them happy.... Just as people participate in the glory of God in different degrees, so also in hell some suffer more than others. He who lived with this vice of sodomy suffers more than another, for this is the greatest sin."

Christbros are OBSESSED with anal.

Christians appear to me to be obsessed with abortion, at least politically.

I'm surprised they don't make a bigger issue of sodomy.

If they believe that it kills real persons , and they do, this “obsession” makes sense.

Who ever disputed that homosexuals are real persons?

Great. I remember studying a bit of medieval moral philosophy and the most plausible reconstruction that I saw of arguments against some non-procreative sex acts is that it's incompatible with the function of man--to cultivate virtue to best worship God. And the main premise is an empirical one--the effects on character prevents a man from cultivating virtue. It gets away from the idea that the act is intrinsically wrong. Fair reading?

Sure there were tons of great scientific studies on the relationship between intellectual performance and butt sex in the 1400s. It’s a shame these studies were lost to history and we have to rely on our flawed psychology which says no such thing.

I dunno about the rest of you but my empirical evidence with heterosexuality suggests an even more robust & general phenomenon than St Bernardine thought!

Saint Bernardine of Siena had plenty of direct empirical experience of sodomy. Taking it in the ass made him deliriously aroused. He had an insatiable craving for a reach-around. His statements against homosexuality were esoteric lessons in favor of it--by describing its alleged effects pejoratively he knew he could entice young men who'd had similar experiences, but didn't understand to join themselves to the Church more closely.

Yes, it's the Christians. Not the sodomites who routinely turn the streets of major cities into live-action Grinder hookups, in clear view of children. Because of tolerance. Because a grown man turning his rectum into a McDonald's playground (and they LOVE the young ones so this is an all too apt metaphor) is just being cool, man.

Sick deviants.

On a more serious note, why should I have to read this drivel? This is a forum where academic philosophers are discussing issues of the profession and/or philosophical arguments. Why should I care what sexual mores you have? Where is St. Bernardine's argument? How does any of this affect the discipline of philosophy? Lots of people in different times and places believed stupid and wrong things- why is this noteworthy or interesting to discuss?

Betty

Relatedly, why isn't the fact that sodomy is the worst sin on good St. Bernardine's account just a compelling reductio of Christian morality?

Still no one can justify why I have to read this drivel. Humanity is burning our world's biodiversity at an alarming rate and we're maybe on the verge of nuclear war and starvation is a rampant killer in both the developed and developing world and the religious right has no better ideas of what to focus their moral energies on than where people choose to put their dicks? Am I really to believe that you worship an almighty god who is as intellectually and morally regressive as you are?

Look, you had some 2,500 years to try to convince people who don't share your intuitions that butt sex is icky that sodomy is a moral wrong. And you failed. Now the view gets to sit in the dust bin of stupid ideas for the rest of history.

What kind of dumb shit thinks that psychology and sociological facts are irrelevant to philosophy? You may not be interested in human behavior but it is very interested you and your cloistered little department.
